Uzbekistan is increasing the volume of household waste recycling
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The waste recycling system in Uzbekistan is actively developing. On the occasion of World Recycling Day, the Ministry of Ecology reported significant progress in this area. Under the initiative of the President, projects for converting waste into energy and other useful products are being implemented.
Investment agreements have already been signed with the UAE, South Korea, and China for the construction of plants that generate electricity from waste. The South Korean company Seijin has already launched a similar project at the "Akhangaran" landfill. Additionally, 66 public-private partnership projects for waste sorting and recycling are in operation.
According to Nodir Sherkulov, the chief specialist of the Ministry of Ecology, these enterprises collect and process household waste.
Umid Khommatov from the Waste Management and Circular Economy Development Agency noted that over the past six months, waste recycling companies (in over 292 sectors) have processed 270,000 tons out of 5.2 million tons of household waste (5.2% of the total volume). The number of enterprises involved in recycling and the production of finished products is constantly growing.
An example is the "Tashkent Plastic Polymer" company, which recycles more than 50 tons of waste daily and produces 15 types of products, including plastic boxes, pallets, corrugated cardboard products, and others. The company's director, Dilmurod Khodjaev, emphasized that recycled waste is reused, and special attention is paid to the strength and elasticity of the products.
By 2027, it is planned to build 11 waste-to-energy plants (producing 2.1 billion kWh annually), which will reduce the number of landfills by five times, generate $97 million from electricity sales, save 152 million cubic meters of natural gas, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.4 million tons, and create 1,200 new jobs.
